We all have storms and stories
inside our starmade bodies
That even the night sky cannot hold.
This is why we are on this earth;
to learn how to love each other,
to learn how to love and hold ourselves.

Firstly I loved the cover of the book. It’s beautiful. The title itself makes you pick the book. The blurb of the book is fascinating. The narration of the stories is engaging and apt. The poems will touch your soul. one can relate to each and every word from the very first page.

Various themes like Love, empowerment, feminism, mental illness, Hope are used by the author makes the book more interesting. The author has described each and every emotion beautifully keeping the reader hooked throughout.

There are some beautiful sketches which make the book more special. My favourite Poems, stories are- The universal Truth, A tale of two sisters, Wendy and The stepmother’s Tale.

I loved Poems more than the stories. There’s the strength, hope, love everything together in the book. Somewhere I find this book a lil heavy read. Do read this book. You’ll fall in love with the poems.

Summary:

Reimagining traditional tales, this empowering collection of stories, poems and beautiful hand-drawn illustrations gives Once Upon a Time a much-needed modern makeover. Gone are the gender stereotypes of obliging lovers, violent men and girls that need rescuing. Instead, lines blur between heroes and villains and you’ll meet brave princesses, a new kind of wolf lurking in the concrete jungle and a courageous Gretel who can bring down monsters on her own.

    You should also read Carol Ann Duffy’s poetry collection, The World’s Wife, which is also a retelling, not of fairy tales, but of the female side of several well known Western icons such as Sisyphus or Midas among others
